A Note from the Owner

Jordana and her soul cat, Eli

My name is Jordana and I am the owner/operator of Comfy Claws.  I started my career in the pet care industry in 2010 as a kennel worker, became a veterinary technician in 2014, and passed the Veterinary Technician National Exam (VTNE) to become a certified veterinary technician in my home state of New Jersey in 2022.  I have worked in a variety of veterinary hospital settings and disciplines, such as mixed small animal general practice (cats, dogs, pocket pets), emergency medicine, orthopedic & specialty surgery, internal medicine, and dentistry; since 2020, I have worked at a local feline-only practice, where I am the lead tech and support staff supervisor. While I have always been a crazy cat lady, working in this specialized environment has given me an even deeper understanding of, and passion for, our feline friends and their  well-being.  I especially love speaking to cat parents- I don't like to call them 'owners' because, as most cat people know, cats are strong-willed creatures who can't really be 'owned'- and educating them about their cats' health, helping them understand complex behaviors or medical issues, and guiding them in their decision-making about what is going to be best for their cats' unique situation.

I started Comfy Claws as a response to a trend I observed among cat parents I met in the clinic; many were asking if the clinic staff were available to perform "house calls" to help with trimming their cats' nails, giving medications, and cat sitting.  Of course, like many veterinary hospitals, our clinic is not set up to provide those types of services, and we often had no one to refer these clients to.  As a result, some clients were unable to continue with certain recommended treatment plans for their cats since they were unable to medicate them on their own, and other clients had to board their cats when they went on vacation... none of which is ideal!  My business aims to provide a solution for these types of problems.

What's my "why", you ask?  Well, aside from my passion for helping cats and their parents, I also know firsthand what it's like to have a cat with medical needs- and how it feels trying to find someone who can help care for them.  See that adorable one-eyed cat I'm holding in this picture?  That's Eli, my soul cat, who was a bit of a "lemon" even before I adopted him and who developed some complex medical issues over the course of his life, requiring extensive care on a daily basis. But he was the BEST cat and I wanted to do everything I could to give him the best life possible.  As a veterinary technician, I was more than capable of providing the care he needed, but that doesn't mean it wasn't overwhelming at times!  I also often wondered what would have happened if he had been adopted by someone with no veterinary background- not to mention the anxiety I always felt when I would go on vacation and have to leave him in someone else's care! Sadly, my beloved Eli went to the Rainbow Bridge in December of 2024.  I learned so much from him and I will miss him for the rest of my life... however, I can think of no better way to honor his memory than by using my experience to help others take care of their cats in the same way I took care of him.

Now, to be clear, I have met MANY amazing cat parents with no veterinary training who have risen to the occasion when their cats needed them the most, but they are the exception and that's okay!  Most people don't adopt a cat expecting to step into the role of caregiver; after all, cats are usually thought to be "low maintenance" pets compared to dogs.  If you have a cat with- or even without- special needs, and feel overwhelmed taking care of them, let me help!  I am here to support you every step of the way and make sure that the bond you share is never jeopardized by the care they need.
